I was here right around that time for the 2010 Customer Support Conference. It attracted a huge number of local business folks involved in online businesses. My company's expertise is in robust systems that optimize help desk workflow, something you need when the needs of you customers outgrow your email support. Yes, we're geeky, but... I haven't been back to Ho Chi Minh City since that time so I don't know if the hotel is still open. But during that conference, I was introduced to the original development team that was responsible for the hotel's website. Turns out their lead developer attended the same art school as me - RISD. A lot of art grads end up doing web work since it's an opportunity to earn a living from your art skills. But when artists get involved in tech, they enter a world that requires so much more attention to things that are alien to their naive sense of the world. The guys who bought the original domain with the idea of creating a beautiful site ended up being victimized by very sophisticated scam. You see when you purchase a domain, you need to renew the registration every year. And there are people who take advantage of this fact with disinformation. Bob Sakayama of TNG/Earthling is one of the seo experts who alerts his community to these bad players. He has a well known post that exposes the scam that victimized our new dev friends. The scammers send renewal notices to domain owners that appear to be legitimate notices from the registrar, reminders to pay the renewal so they don't lose control of their domains. But the scammers have nothing to do with the registrar and if you pay them, you not only lose money, but you may believe your domain is registered when it is not. The scam is very long running, so it is clearly successful. Read Bob's post and be warned.

Hopefully my work will take me back to South East Asia and I will be able to report back whether the hotel is still welcoming visitors or not. I'll keep you posted. But for now, this is a nostalgic trip back to 2011 when the Saigon Liberty Hotel was welcoming visitors from everywhere.
